NEWS
In 2008, approximately 719 tons of material were processed in various ways at Bristol's landfill and recycling center. Some 146 tons of material received at the facility were recycled as composted yard waste. Plastics, tires, paper, cardboard, glass, metal, oil, and electronics totaled 326 tons. Three hundred forty-eight tons of MSW (municipal solid waste) was disposed of by compacting and covering with soil at the landfill site. Bristol successfully diverted roughly 48% of all the material brought to the facility from being land filled. Our conversion to single-streaming material other than newsprint and corrugated cardboard last August has greatly improved the appearance and operation of the recycling center.
Our revised Solid Waste Implementation Plan was approved by the Dept. of Environmental Conservation and was adopted by the Selectboard last April. The Plan outlines measures for attaining a waste diversion rate of 50%, methods for more detailed accounting of solid waste not managed at our facility, and proactive public education strategies.
We are waiting for the State to approve our application for our third five year certification to operate an unlined landfill accepting less than 1000 tons of trash per year. Our consultants have indicated that Bristol has enough remaining volume at the landfill to continue to be re-certified and operate through 2032.
Three household hazardous waste collections are scheduled for 2009. The events will take place at the recycling center from 8 AM until noon on July 18th, August 22nd, and November 7th.
Businesses that intend to participate at those times must contact the District Coordinator at the town offices two weeks in advance since it is necessary that they be charged for the service and the contractor must know the nature of the materials to be collected in order to arrange for proper transport for disposal.
